Chapter 2 - Blue Lights and Broken Bonds

The arrival of two uniformed city police officers turned the bistro into a theater of whispers and craning necks. The maitre d' tried to intercept them at the hostess stand, but Officer Miller, a tall woman with a tactical vest and a sharp, no-nonsense demeanor, bypassed him immediately once she spotted our tense group at the back booth. By this time, Eleanor had attempted to gather her shopping bags and leave through the side patio, but Thomas had physically blocked the aisle, standing like a brick wall while his mother hissed curses under her breath.

"Who placed the emergency call regarding an abandoned minor?" Officer Miller asked, her hand resting near her utility belt as her partner began clearing the immediate area, politely asking the gawking patrons at neighboring tables to give the family privacy.

"I did, Officer," I said, stepping forward while keeping Chloe securely wrapped inside Thomas’s heavy winter coat. "My mother-in-law, Eleanor Vance, took my daughter out for a family shopping trip this morning. She left her unsupervised on a concrete bench at the central bus terminal for four hours while she took the other children shopping."

Eleanor immediately launched into a frantic, high-pitched defense, her face flushing a deep, mottled red. "Officer, this is a ridiculous family misunderstanding! I am her grandmother! The child was being disobedient and refused to walk. I simply left her in a designated seating area to cool off while I ran a few quick errands. These two are hysterical and trying to humiliate me in public!"

Officer Miller didn't even blink at Eleanor’s outburst. She crouched down to eye level with Chloe, her expression softening instantly. "Hey there, sweetie. My name is Officer Miller. Can you tell me how long you were sitting on that bench by yourself?"

Chloe sniffled, burying her chin deeper into the collar of Thomas's coat. She looked up at her grandmother, then terrified, looked back at the officer. "Grandma said if I moved an inch, the monsters would get me," Chloe whispered, her voice trembling so hard we could barely hear her over the restaurant's background noise. "My feet hurt really bad and I asked for water, but she said I was ruining the day for everyone else. She told me to wait by the brick pillar and not talk to anyone."

The second officer had taken Eleanor’s shopping bags and was systematically checking the time-stamped receipts from Saks Fifth Avenue, Apple, and a high-end jewelry boutique. "Officer Miller," he called out grimly, holding up a long thermal receipt. "First purchase was at 1:15 PM at the north wing of the mall. Last purchase was fifteen minutes ago at the wine shop next door. That places the gap at exactly four hours and twelve minutes."

Victoria buried her face in her hands, sobbing quietly, finally realizing the gravity of the situation. Officer Miller stood up, her face like stone, and reached for the handcuffs on her belt. "Eleanor Vance, please stand up and place your hands behind your back. You are being placed under arrest for felony child endangerment and abandonment."
