Chapter 3 - The Ghost Protocol

We left Emily sleeping under the heavy sedation of a prescribed anxiety medication, guarded by a trusted private security contact Marcus knew from his days on the force.

We headed straight to Marcus’s office in downtown Atlanta—a gritty, disorganized room filled with filing cabinets, cigarette smoke, and computer servers. Marcus threw his keys onto the desk and booted up his main terminal.

"If Claire hired a hitman, she used untraceable cash," Marcus said, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "But nobody just snaps and hires a ghost in the floorboards. This takes planning. Weeks, maybe months. I need your banking passwords. Everything."

I numbly recited the passwords to our joint accounts, my savings, and my 401k. As the screens loaded, the numbers stared back at us like a cruel joke.

Zero. Zero. Overdrawn.

"She drained it," I whispered, staring at the screen. "Three hundred thousand dollars. Gone. When?"

"Yesterday afternoon, right after you boarded your flight to Cincinnati," Marcus confirmed, pointing at the timestamps. "She wire-transferred the funds to a shell corporation in the Cayman Islands. But that's not the worst part, Arthur. Look at this."

He pulled up a background check on Claire. I had seen her birth certificate when we applied for a marriage license. Claire Miller from Seattle. But the screen flashed red.

"Claire Miller died in a house fire in 1994 when she was four years old," Marcus said grimly. "Whoever you've been sleeping next to for the last ten years, whoever birthed your daughter... her name isn't Claire. She stole an identity."

The room spun. My entire life, my entire marriage, was a meticulously crafted lie.

"What about Evelyn?" I asked, desperation clawing at my throat. "Her mother? I spoke to her. She told me Emily wasn't their concern anymore."

Marcus brought up another search. "Evelyn Vance. Also a stolen identity. The real Evelyn Vance has been in a vegetative state in a nursing home in Oregon since 2001. Arthur, these women are grifters. High-level black widows. They target men with money, clean them out, and disappear. But usually, they don't leave loose ends. The guy in your floorboards? He wasn't just a hitman. He was likely a cleaner. He was supposed to kill you, kill Emily, and stage it as a home invasion."

"But he got greedy," I realized, the horrifying puzzle pieces clicking into place. "He wanted more money. He threatened to take Emily. Claire didn't kill him to protect our daughter. She killed him because he compromised the exit strategy."

"Exactly," Marcus nodded, racking the slide of a 9mm Glock and sliding it across the desk toward me. "And if she realizes Emily survived the night and talked to you... she’s going to come back to finish the job."
