Chapter 10 - The Trap Is Set

The idea of using the happiest day of my life as a tactical snare for a serial killer made my stomach turn with icy dread.

David stood up from the table instantly, slamming his palm against the heavy oak wood with enough force to rattle the satellite equipment.

“Absolutely not,” David snarled, glaring down at Agent Harrison with fierce, protective defiance.

“You are not putting Sarah on display in a public church like a tethered goat waiting for a tiger to strike!”

“Mr. Monroe, sit down and listen to the tactical reality of our situation,” Agent Harrison replied calmly, refusing to be intimidated by David’s anger.

“Miller knows you are currently under federal protection because he watched us evacuate the suburban house from the surveillance perimeter.”

“If we cancel the wedding and keep Sarah hidden in protective custody indefinitely, Miller will simply go back underground into the shadows.”

Agent Chen turned her laptop toward us, showing a dark, anonymous online forum where itinerant criminals traded stolen identities and false paperwork.

“We intercepted an encrypted inquiry posted two hours ago by an IP address associated with Miller’s burner phone,” she revealed.

“He is actively seeking a fraudulent Canadian passport and a clean vehicle title for a cargo van, which means he is preparing to flee the country.”

“If he crosses the northern border into the Canadian wilderness with a new identity, we may never find him again, David,” I said quietly, touching my fiancé’s arm.

“And if we don't catch him now... he will eventually find another seven-year-old girl at another county fair to replace me.”

David looked at me, his jaw clenching as he saw the absolute determination settling into my eyes despite my trembling hands.

He knew that as long as Gregory Miller was alive and free, we would never be able to build a normal, peaceful life together.

“What is the operational layout of this trap, Agent Harrison?” David asked coldly, sitting back down in his chair with a resigned sigh.

“We let the local newspapers run a fabricated story tomorrow morning confirming that your wedding is proceeding as scheduled this Saturday at St. Jude’s Church,” Harrison explained.

“We replace the entire church staff, the organist, the catering crew, and the parking attendants with heavily armed undercover FBI SWAT operators.”

“We allow Miller to infiltrate the perimeter believing he has outsmarted our security detail, and the moment he steps onto the church grounds, we take him down.”

My father walked over from the fireplace, his face haggard but his eyes burning with a newfound, vengeful resolve.

“I want to be at that church, Agent Harrison,” my dad said, his voice steadying for the first time since we found the calendar.

“I invited that bastard into my home and let him build a viewing cage over my daughter's bed; I am going to be there when you put him in chains.”

Agent Harrison nodded respectfully at my father before turning his gaze back to me and David.

“We have forty-eight hours until Saturday afternoon to fortify St. Jude’s Church into the most secure fortress in the state of Colorado,” the agent said.

“Until then, nobody leaves this safehouse without a two-man armed escort, and nobody answers an unrecognized phone call.”

As the agents began coordinating the tactical logistics over their encrypted satellite radios, I looked out the reinforced window into the dark pine forest.

The snow was falling heavier now, blanketing the mountain wilderness in a deep, white silence that felt deceptively peaceful.

Somewhere out there in the freezing dark, Gregory Alan Miller was preparing his own plans for my wedding day.
