Chapter 3 - The Flying Monkeys

By Tuesday afternoon, the digital bombardment had begun. My phone was blowing up with texts, voice notes, and missed calls from aunts, uncles, and cousins who hadn’t spoken to me in months. In our family ecosystem, my mother was the master manipulator, dispatching "flying monkeys" to guilt-trip whomever stepped out of line.
“Your mother is in tears, Elena,” Aunt Linda wrote. “Chloe is having panic attacks about losing her wedding venue. How could you cancel your card without warning? You know how much this means to her!”
“Family comes first,” my cousin Greg chimed in via a group chat I was forcibly added to. “You make plenty of money at that tech job. Stop being selfish and help your sister out. You’re ruining her life over a cup of spilled tea.”
Spilled tea. They were already rewriting history. I took screenshots of every single message, cataloging them in a subfolder labeled Witness Tampering & Harassment. I didn't reply to a single one. Engaging would only feed their narrative that I was hysterical or unreasonable. Instead, I drafted a single, formal statement and sent it to the family group chat before exiting:

"I was physically assaulted with boiling tea on Sunday, resulting in second-degree burns. Following that, an unauthorized attempt of $6,850 was made on my credit card using a fraudulent digital wallet. This matter is now in the hands of the police and my legal counsel. Any further harassment regarding this criminal investigation will be forwarded to the authorities."
The silence that followed was deafening.
