Chapter 5 - The Safehouse

They drove for two hours in silence, winding deep into the forested hills of upstate New York. The SUV finally turned down an obscured, unpaved road, stopping in front of a sprawling, heavily fortified cabin hidden among the pines.

Victor carried Gabriel inside, laying him out on a massive leather sofa in the center of the rustic living room. The syndicate boss was barely conscious, feverish and losing blood rapidly.

"I need a medical kit," Clara ordered, stripping off her bloody sweater and rolling up the sleeves of her undershirt. "Sterile saline, sutures, antibiotics, and clean towels. Now, Victor!"

Victor didn't argue. He returned minutes later with a military-grade trauma kit.

For the next hour, Clara worked in a frantic, focused blur. The environment was unsanitary, the lighting was terrible, but her hands were perfectly steady. She reopened Gabriel’s wound, cleaned the torn muscle, and painstakingly restitched the damage under local anesthetic.

Gabriel stayed awake through the brutal process, his jaw locked tight, refusing to cry out. His whiskey eyes never left her face.

"You're beautiful when you're focused," Gabriel rasped, his voice rough with pain.

Clara paused, her hands hovering over his chest. She looked down at him, her heart doing a strange, unfamiliar flutter. "You're hallucinating from the blood loss, Mr. Thorne."

"I am completely lucid," he whispered, reaching up to brush a stray lock of hair behind her ear. His knuckles grazed her soft jawline. "And I told you to call me Gabriel."

Clara swallowed hard, taping the final bandage into place. "You need to rest, Gabriel. The infection risk is astronomically high. If you spike a fever tonight, I don't have the equipment to save you."

"I won't die," Gabriel promised softly. "Not when I finally found something worth living for."

He slipped into a heavy, exhausted sleep. Clara collapsed back into a nearby armchair, her adrenaline finally crashing. She pulled her knees to her chest in the dark, listening to the wind howl against the cabin windows, wondering how a man who killed for a living could make her feel safer than she ever had in her entire life.
