Chapter 9 - The Twins Come Home

Two months after the day in the NICU, the greatest victory of my life finally arrived.

I stood in the hospital room, tears streaming down my face, as the nurses helped me dress Ethan and Lily in matching going-home outfits. They had doubled in weight. Their lungs were strong. They didn't need the monitors, the tubes, or the incubators anymore. They were perfectly healthy, beautiful babies.

Arthur stood by the door, leaning on his cane, a rare, genuine smile on his face.

“Ready to go home, Clara?” he asked gently.

“Yes,” I whispered, kissing both of my babies’ warm foreheads.

We didn't go back to the townhouse. We drove through the massive iron gates of the Sterling Estate, a sprawling, historic manor set on two hundred acres of lush countryside. Arthur had converted the entire west wing into a state-of-the-art nursery and living quarters for us.

As I carried my children into their new home, surrounded by staff who looked at them with genuine care, I realized that Julian’s cruelty had been the greatest gift he could have ever given me. By trying to cast us out, he had forced me to return to my roots, to embrace my legacy, and to build an impenetrable fortress around my children.
