Chapter 3 - The Tarmac Welcome

The moment the wheels hit the tarmac at JFK, the captain’s voice crackled over the intercom.
"Ladies and gentlemen, please remain seated with your seatbelts fastened. We have a security situation that requires law enforcement to board the aircraft first."
Mrs. Belmont sat up straight, a sickeningly smug grin spreading across her face. She adjusted her Prada cardigan and smoothed her hair. "Well," she announced loudly to the cabin, "I hope you enjoy your time in Rikers. Thug."
The heavy cabin doors swung open. Four Port Authority police officers, accompanied by two TSA supervisors, marched into the first-class cabin.
Mrs. Belmont stood up, pointing directly at me. "Officers! Right here. This is the man who assaulted me. I want him in handcuffs immediately. My husband’s attorneys are already—"
"Mrs. Belmont?" the lead officer interrupted, his face a mask of stone.

"Ma'am, you need to step into the aisle and place your hands behind your back."
Her smug smile froze, then shattered. "What? No! You have the wrong person! He's the one who—"
"We have sworn statements from the flight crew, the federal Air Marshal, and video evidence from three separate passengers sent ahead to the tower," the officer stated coldly. "You are under arrest for assault, battery, and destruction of private property. Turn around, ma'am."
"No! NO!" she shrieked, backing into the bulkhead as the officers advanced. "You can't do this! Do you know who my husband is?! Richard Belmont will end your careers!"

The click of the steel handcuffs echoing through the quiet cabin was the most satisfying sound I had heard all year. As they marched her down the aisle, her designer heels dragging on the carpet, she looked back at me. Her eyes were wild, frantic, and entirely devoid of their previous arrogance.
I didn't gloat. I didn't say a word. I simply raised my coffee-stained glass of sparkling water in a silent, mocking toast.
