Chapter 9 - The New Blueprint

The beeping of the monitor was different now. It was steady. Strong.

Elena sat by the hospital bed, watching Leo’s chest rise and fall with perfect, even breaths. The surgery had been a complete success. The state-of-the-art synthetic valve was functioning flawlessly.

The door opened softly, and Julian walked in. He was leaning heavily on his cane, moving with a pronounced limp, but he was walking.

Elena stood up, tears springing to her eyes all over again. She crossed the room and threw her arms around his neck. Julian dropped his cane, wrapping his arms around her waist, burying his face in her neck.

"Callahan?" she whispered.

"Gone," Julian replied, kissing her temple. "Boston is quiet. And it will stay quiet."

He pulled back, looking down at Leo. The boy blinked his eyes open, groggy from the anesthesia. He looked at Julian standing at the foot of his bed.

"You're not in the tank," Leo whispered sleepily.

Julian smiled—a real, genuine smile that reached his dark eyes. "No, kid. I'm out of the tank. Thanks to your mother."

Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He didn't kneel—his knees wouldn't allow it yet—but he held it open for Elena to see. Inside was a brilliant, flawless diamond.

"I am a man of shadows, Elena," Julian said quietly, his voice thick with emotion. "But you and this boy are the light. I have spent the last twelve hours restructuring my operations. Victor is taking over the day-to-day. The violent parts of my life are being locked away. I want to build something new. With you. If you'll have a stubborn, recovering mob boss."

Elena looked at the ring, then at Leo, who was smiling, and finally up at the man who had torn his own body apart to protect them.

"On one condition," Elena whispered, wiping a tear from her cheek. "You never skip your physical therapy again."

"I wouldn't dare," Julian murmured, sliding the ring onto her finger. "I'm terrified of my doctor."
